Background

What material should I use?
In determining what media the filter bag should be manufactured from, you should first identify the chemical and thermal make up of the fluid you are processing. You can then determine what materials are thermally and chemically compatible with your process. Once you have determined what fibre is compatible with your application, determine the type of filtration you want to perform. You can accomplish depth filtration using a nominally rated felt, or a more precise woven mesh offering surface filtration. All materials are assigned a micron rating (see this chart(PDF) ) to achieve your desired level of filtration.

What are the basic types of filtration?
There are too many types of liquid filtration to identify here. Filter bags and cartridges are two of the most common methods for removing contaminate from liquid. All methods of filtering have their benefits but filter bags are known as an inexpensive and user friendly alternative. Filter bags are great for high flow rates and high dirt load applications.

What is differential pressure?
Differential Pressure (often displayed as PSID, Delta P or ΔP)is the pressure that is created across the filter as it gets contaminated. The differential pressure is calculated by subtracting the downstream pressure (after the filter) from the upstream pressure (before the filter). Differential Pressure as it relates to filter bags is critical because it identifies when a bag should be changed. Traditionally the recommended change out for a filter bag is 25 ΔP.

What is a micron and what does it mean to me?
"Micron" is a metric unit of measurement which is 1/1000 of a millimeter, or 1/24000 of an inch. The smallest particle visible to the human eye is 40 micron and contaminate will be made up of a wide range . The size of the particles measured in microns helps determine the type of media you will choose for your filter bag.

Which is better, mesh or felt?
Mesh and felt are very different media and perform differently depending on the application. It is important to understand your process and how it will impact on the filter (Please review this page). One type of media is not necessarily "better" than the other, but simply more suited to your operating conditions.

Which is superior, a plastic flange top or a steel ring top?
Although our steel ring bag is a revolutionary modification to the standard steel ring style and reduces the potential for bypass by eliminating the "Lump" . Our PolyformSEAL™  plastic flange has superior sealing capabilities. The other advantage to the plastic flange top is the fully welded construction and integrated plastic handles. Also keep in mind the thermal and chemical compatibility of the materials used in the construction of the bag with the fluid you are processing.
Is there a difference between polyester and polypropylene felt?
The difference is primarily the thermal and chemical compatibility. Traditionally the polyester is used on steel ring bags and polypropylene on the plastic flange. Our 100% polypropylene filter bag is manufactured from FDA compliant material for food grade applications.
Why does my filter bag seem longer than my support basket?
Filter bags are basically a two dimensional flat tube with a collar. It must fill up void spaces of a three dimensional support basket. Therefore it incorporates the width of the bottom of the basket in the length of the bag. The bag only appears longer than the support basket. Without support, the bag will not be able to achieve the maximum differential pressure capacity and could rupture.

What is the range of micron retention you offer?
Please review the following chart (PDF) to correlate the material you are looking for with the micron rating available. For greater efficiency please review our High Efficiency POMF series filter bags.

Why would I choose filter bags over a cartridge?
Filter bags have five distinct advantages over cartridges.
  1. Dirt stays in the bag
  2. Greater surface area
  3. Lower clean pressure drop
  4. Fewer sealing points
  5. Easy and quick bag change out

I need FDA approved material. Is your product FDA approved?
All fully welded polypropylene felt filter bags with the PolyformSEAL™ are manufactured from FDA compliant raw materials.
What is your standard box quantity?
We have a wide variety of box sizes, however our standard packaging is 50 pieces per box.
Do you offer private labelling?
We would be pleased to customize tags with your part number and contact information.

Do you have a system to filter Biodiesel
Filter Bags are commonly used to clean old cooking oil to create what is called "biodiesel". Biodiesel applications are usually low flow or batch filtration and our Application Guide (PDF) will help us design your required filter system.
Do you accept returns?
Depending on the type of bag, we may be able to accept them with a restocking fee. You can tell by our nomenclature that there are innumerable combinations of material, micron ratings, sizes and options. It may be impossible to resell your exact bag.

Bag Operation and maintenance

Can I clean and reuse my filter bag?
Felt filter bags are not designed to be cleaned and reused. In some applications the mesh bags can be cleaned to be reused, but you should inspect the bag to ensure the stitching and material are all intact.
How do I know when to change bags?
Filter bags should be changed out when the differential pressure across the filter bags reaches a maximum of 25 PSID.
What is the flow rate capacity of your filter bags?
This is not an easy question to answer because it requires the consideration of a number of contributing variables such as flow rate, pressure, viscosity, dirt loading and desired retention rate.  This chart outlines the estimated guidelines used to determine the size and number of filter bags to use.
